Hi,
I have recently installed OVMS and am wondering if it is possible to use the OVMS module as a 3G wifi hub and then allowing non 3g devices to connect for internet access.
With the modem connected it would make sense rather than having to subscribe to anothe 3g connection?
Thanks
Sorry, but no wifi hotspot functionality in OVMS. It is unlikely to come any time soon as (a) the link between the modem and ovms is 115200 baud, (b) there are no flow control pins for higher speeds, and (c) the freertos environment we use doesn't have this capability.
You can use an external wifi hotspot and connect OVMS to that (rather than using the optional modem board).
I'd like to add a +1 to this request. I am getting free unlimited data only sim cards (and I'm sure there will be more and more options for cheaper mobile internet). With the OVMS box attached to the OBD port, one would need to either run a dedicated power line, use a dedicated 12V plug-in, or have a portable battery to keep the HotSpot running while parked. A separate hotspot would also be somewhat dangerous to keep running 24/7 since it won't have the capability to be turned off remotely if the 12V battery drops below a threshold. So, I think it would be great if the next gen hardware would allow for some form of implementation either by connecting the GSM SD card with the Wi-Fi module, or have a USB port with remote-disconnect capability (or something like that).
