OVMS for Chevrolet Volt / Opel Ampera

Hi everybody,

this is e-marc from Vienna/Austria. Happy to join this forum!

I did my first miles with my brand new Ampera and I'm really happy with it.
However, I am missing the possibility to check the status of the car on my mobile.

Looking for a solution brought me right across the OVMS.

Guys, you exactly building what I was searching for! GREAT job, really!

...however in connection with the Tesla vehicles only.

Found some connections to the Chevrolet Volt too: http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread.php?12958-CAN-bus-reading-remote-vie...

I would guess that the numbers of Volt/Ampera sold will exceed the sales figures of Tesla quickly (in case they not already have done that by now) and the number of people who are interested in such a solution might be huge in case the system can be adapted to these cars. OnStar is not working in Europe...

markwj: what is the status in connection with Volt/Ampera? Is there an interest on your side to go for the Volt/Ampera? Is there a specific help needed from the Volt/Ampera community for you to develop a suitable SW?

have a great day,

e-marc

Volt/Ampera

Since dpeillow posted on the Volt forums, there has been some interest in this. We have a developer (Michael) who is about to start work on this. If you are interested in helping (even if only to test, but you must be able to PICKIT2/PICKIT3 download firmware), please get on the http://lists.teslaclub.hk/mailman/listinfo/ovmsdev mailing lists where we are starting to discuss this.

e-marc
If I understand correctly, I

If I understand correctly, I have to start by purchasing the car module and a PICkit2 programmer.
Right?
(In case I'm right I will post this information on a German Ampera forum. I'm sure there are some more interested in joining us to create an ampera solution )

I'm not a SW developer, but uploading to a PIC will not exceed my possibilities ;-). And yes, Im interested in helping by doing the test runs with my Ampera and Android.

I'm on the list now.

e-marc,

e-marc,

We have one developer in Germany about to start work on this, and have some steps planned. If you have time to help out, that would be appreciated (by both us and the Ampera community). You will need a module and a PICKIT2 or PICKIT3 programmer.

Regards, Mark.

Hi e-marc,

Hi e-marc,
I (Michael) still waiting for my Volt (and the Module).
Your welcome to help.
If you would buy a Pickit Dont buy a Version 3. Thy tend to brick themselve.
I wait now for a Icd2 to unbrick my pickit3.
I am on gm-Volt and Opel-Ampera.

Bye
Michael

Best to carry on this

Best to carry on this discussion on the ovmsdev mailing list. The main firmware code change has been made to support modular implementations for the can bus drivers (per vehicle), and the stub code for can_voltampera has been done. Work now is on the cable (OVMS -> Volt/Ampera ODBII) and can driver. After that is working, we'll have to work on the Apps to make it look prettier.

e-marc
Hi Michael,

Hi Michael,

I will order the car module and the pickit2 (thanks for advising) within the next few days.
btw: Are you member of the german opel-ampera-forum.de?

Pls let me know how I can help.

Ampera

Disgusted by the lack of native support for an app by Opel, I shall lurk on this forum. As soon as there is anything to test I will gladly do it.

We've found the European Volt

We've found the European Volt/Ampera does not have gps on the can bus. Seems to be gps signal is part of onstar service. Now waiting for OVMS v2 hardware, which has gps in the module.

Other work for Volt/Ampera is ongoing.

Any Warranty Issues?

Does anyone know if GM is happy for this device to be added to the Volt/Ampera in that it won't breach any warranty issues?

markwj

My opinion is that I don't

My opinion is that I don't think they will ever authorise a third party accessory. The general feedback from things like this is that if the device causes a part of the car to fail, they won't honour the warranty on that part. But, if some part of your car fails, completely unrelated to the device, then they will have trouble denying a warranty claim on that.

For example, say windscreen wipers are warrantied. They will have trouble claiming the wiper was damaged by an ODBII device. But, if the ODBII port that the device is plugged into is shorted, that is a different story.

Volt/Ampera Owners

Does anyone have an idea on the number of Volt/Ampera owners who are currently using this system or is it not yet available for general use?

Is there a list of functions that are currently available for the Volt/Ampera and is there any future functionality in development?

Work on volt/Ampera is still

Work on volt/Ampera is still in progress. It has been quite difficult, due to the lack of GPS and complexity of the can bus arrangement, but progress is being made.

Development discussions take place on the developers mailing list.

I suggest you try the v2

I suggest you try the v2 branch of code. Ongoing work will be from there.

Also, what pin out cable are you using?

binaries in v2 not up to date?

I tried the binaries in the v2 branch, but they are not the correct ones..!?

mikeljo sent me a "nightly build" - self compiled, that runs perfectly. Should I set up an own development system to compule m own binaries out of the source or how could I find the correct synchronized binary?

As the Volt/Ampera support is

As the Volt/Ampera support is in development at the moment, it is best to build from sources. You should use MPLABX and the Microchip C18 compiler, both downloadable for free from the microchip website.

Any news ?

Hi guys !
Do you have any news reg. the Chevy Volt / Opel Ampera-integration ?
I noticed the detailed Roadster and Twizy-Manual, but non for the Volt/Ampera.
E.g. what vehicle-id to set (CV ?) ? OA does not produce a good STAT-response.

Module comand strange? response

Hi, Use the MODULE? command I get the following response:
MODULE:
VehicleID: (this is OK)
VehicleType:VA (correct)
Units:M (correct)
Notifications:SMSIAT+CIPSHUT (anyone know what this means?)

Any info gratefully received.

Looks like you were having

Looks like you were having some GSM comms issues at the time of the SMS. The AT+CIPSHUT is used to shutdown the GPRS connection (usually when something is going wrong or being reset). If it happens repeatedly, let us know.

You might also try to use the smartphone app to reset the parameter for notifications.

Control of the Volt's Systems

The guys behind obdCANeX have managed to gain rudimentary control over the Volt (Remote Start, Stop, Lock, Unlock All, Unlock Driver, Panic, Disable Panic) using the Single Wire Can Bus. I've been doing research into how to use the OVMS platform to emulate most if not all of Onstar's features. My research has given me a few insights.
A. Any control commands sent over the SW bus are relayed over the high speed bus by the Body Control Module with it's ID. So if we send an unlock command on the SW bus all the modules respond as if the BCM ordered it.
B. The OVMS cable hasn't been cabled to allow connection to the SW bus, I don't know if it has any extra wires that can be pinned up or if it would require a whole new cable.
C. The OVMS module hasn't been pinned to support additional I/O, however it does have extra I/O ports available.
Thoughts?

RE: Control of the Volt's Systems

I all ready have resolved this issue with my own solution. I have a android phone that stays in the car with a app that I made which receives text messages then depending on message it connects to a Obdlink MX bluetooth adapter and send commands to the GMLAN single wire and High speed bus. Like lock, remote start, roll windows up/down, trigger horn/lights and check on car status SOC, Fuel, charger amp and voltage ect. I will probably release on the play store in a few months.
