I've just installed my OVMS module in my 2015 Leaf and have a few questions.

So as the title says, I just got my v3 OVMS module and have succesfully installed it in my 2015 Leaf with the TCU unit removed. I'm using the recommended OBDII cable and GPS antenna, but do not yet have the 4g cellular daughter board. I've run throught the initial setup wizard and also updated the firmware to the latest 3.3.002 build. I've also loaded the android app and I can see realtime vehicle status like battery percentage, 12v battery state, tire pressures, cabin temp, and if a door is open or closed. So the connection via wifi and the asia/pacific server seems to all be good. Now for my questions.

1. When I tap on the A/C symbol in the "Car" view I get a pop up with options for Climate Control. If I select "A/C ON" from the list I see "Issueing Climate Control..." and then "Issueing Climate Control => Failed:"  Am I missing a configuration setting somewhere to getting this to work?

2. Same thing with the Lock/Unlock Icon. If I tap on that lock image I get prompted for a pin which I set in the vehicle configuration menu via the web server. But again I get command failed from the android app.

3. GPS car location view in the android app shows location off the coast of east Africa. On the status page via the web server I see "Currently at 0.000000,0.000000 (without GPS lock)". Does this mean the gps Antenna that was provided doesn't work? (yes I have it screwed into the lug marked GPS and not GSM)

4. Does this module have bluetooth support? I'd like to continue using LeafSpy app but I don't see a bluetooth device showing up when I do a search.

This is a US model 2015 leaf with navigation and back up camera if that matters.

Thanks for any help with the above issues.

For anything that changes the vehical state to work, you'll need to turn on CAN writes under Nissan Leaf > Features.

I get prompted for a pin which I set in the vehicle configuration menu via the web server.

The PIN doesn't matter on the LEAF. Leave blank if you can or enter something random. It doesn't need to match.

GPS is provided by the cell modem. The external GPS connector isn't electrically connected to the main board and just goes to another cable that isn't connected to anything.

I don't believe this is true; the modem derives GPS from the 4G signal (for network sync), but does not provide it externally.

I suspect the OP either has a bad GPS antenna (unlikely), a bad connector mount, or a bad/loose interconnect inside the module (even the PCB).

No, the pigtail from the GPS antenna connector goes directly to ANT1 on the modem board. A quick look at the layout confirms that neither anntena connects to anything on the main board (top, bottom).

Thanks, I figured it was going to be something simple like that.

This unfortunatly still doesn't work. At least not correctly. I no longer get a failed prompt with the CAN write set properly so it's actually sending something. I think that something is a A/C off command because if the A/C is on and I issue the lock command it will turn the A/C back off.  The Homelink command option in the App is doing something similar. If I choose Homelink 1 it turns the A/C on, while Homelink 2 option turn the A/C off. So not sure what is going on here.

I do have the vehicle model year set to 2015 in the web user interface under "Nissan Leaf" -> "Features" which matches my leaf's model year.

Thanks again for the help.

No unfortunately; only WiFi (for browswer/web access).

leaf spy wifi connection

First post, still finding my way around.

Regarding using Leaf Spy: I have not connected my OVMS to the Leaf yet, so have not tested this, but noticed that Leaf Spy has a "Wi-fi device" option in the connections list; I was hoping I can use that to connect Leaf Spy to the OVMS. Anyone with experience with this, or willing to test it? I will not have the time within next 3 weeks.

Regarding the GPS connection: as I installed the 4G modem myself, I can confirm the connection of the GPS antenna is through it. The connection itself is finicky, has to be done carefully in order to work (one of my initial problems).

I am somewhat bummed by all issues and problems I am running into after the initial excitement of finding (seemingly) a replacement for the lost 3G monitoring functions for my 2017 Leaf.

No: you are talking about 2 different systems with 2 different solutions (LeafSpy requires an ELM327 compliant adapter).

Beware that there are some incompatibility/conflicts between the TCU (if not disconnected) and OVMS in a 2017 Leaf.

Interesting because from the web user interface on the Status tab under the Module section I see:  "Hardware: OVMS WIFI BLE BT cores=2 rev=ESP32/3"

And the documentation here https://docs.openvehicles.com/en/latest/introduction.html#hardware  list the base module as having "Bluetooth v4.2 BR/EDR and BLE"

So maybe the firmware just doesn't initialize the bluetooth radio? Any other option for running LeafSpy while leaving the OVMS module connected to the OBDII port?

Thanks

While the hardware/chipset may support BT, that sotware has never supported it (to my knowledge).

You would have to "swap" ODB connectors to run (either) OVMS or LeafSpy: you can't have both at the same time. To be honest, I get enough info from the OVMS "metrics list" command that I only run LeafSpy if/when there is an issue (or I need a graph/plot of cell voltages or battery health).

OBD II Splitter

Have you tried using a ODB II splitter? I've used them on other cars to have two items accessing the vehicle at the same time and monitoring variables. You might be able to run OVMS and a bluetooth module for LeafSpy at the same time.

OBD II splitter

I have an OBD II splitter in my setup for exactly this; works great.

Splitter?

What splitter did you get?

I'm having the exact same

I'm having the exact same issues with my 2015 Leaf. I finally got the GPS and cell to work today after playing with it all day yesterday. The GPS ended up being poor antenna placement. The cellular issue ended up being a combination of poor antenna placement combined with an issue with hologram.io having a delay in activating my account on the network.

I can't figure out what's going on with the lock/unlock function. I'm having the exact same issue as the OP. If you send the lock/unlock command, it turns the HVAC system off and the locks don't lock/unlock. The app says the the command was sent OK. I think everything else in the app seems to be working OK, though I haven't tried anything to do with messages yet.

Works on my 2016

Just installed my OVMS box in my 2016 euro leaf, have not unplugged the TCU but AC on and off still works as long as it's actively charging.
Thanks for the tip on turning on CAN write, that got charging and AC control to work :)

Same issue on 2015 Leaf US with answers

I just purchased OVMS and installed on my 2015 Nissan Leaf (US version).  Following all the instructions for installations (including disabling TCU), I'm slightly dissappointed by what the hardware actually delivers.  Turns out the lock/unlock function does NOT work on 2015 Nissan Leaf (at least at this time).  I found the answer in the OVMS bug tracker here:
https://github.com/openvehicles/Open-Vehicle-Monitoring-System-3/issues/231
Turns out the lock/unlock function only works on very limited Leaf years (30kWh LEAF, 2018 LEAF).  It sounds like if it didn't work with the NissanConnet (Nissan CarWings) software, it won't work on OVMS.
I'm also disappointed that to documentation refers to AC fan speeds and temps, but you can't adjust any of those from the OVMS app.  All you get is IF you leave the heat or AC on BEFORE you shut off the car, you can turn that back on with whatever temp you had it previously set to before you shut it off.  You can't adjust the fan speeds or the temp from the OVMS app (at least not at this time).  I had that on my IC car (it's called remote start).  The clicking noise you hear is the AUTO AC turning on, but if you have your fan turned down to low, it really wont help much and may also seem like it's not working.
It does have 12v battery monitor I haven't tapped into yet, and you can set charging limits which I haven't worked with yet either, but everything else you can get with LeafSpy.  Not sure at this point if the cost for OVMS was worth it.
As far as this forum, it feels more like a place to commiserate on our OVMS purchase more than a technical fix forum.  Doesn't look like there are a ton of nerdy developers who owns Leaf vehicles, or who would be willing to fix the OVMS shortcomings for nissan leafs, or at least updating the documentation.

Just posting this to help those of you considering purchasing this device based soley on the functions supposedly available in the documentation.

Are these short comings a fault of the OVMS developers or are they the fault of Nissan?

I've been fighting issues

I've been fighting issues with the HVAC controls not working reliably for a few months now. It didn't work again today. I completely regret the purchase at this point. I'd rather I hadn't spent the money. At least I would just know I HAD to go out and "start" the car when I need to. But the way it is now, it's fiddly and sometimes it works, others it doesn't. I've had my glovebox completely removed for a month now trying to get it to work consistently. The door luck/unlock will never work on these cars unless you had the functionality on the Nissan Connect App. And again, the lack of ability to control the temp kinda sucks. I usually leave the car on AUTO, so it's not usually an issue, but sometimes my wife turns the HVAC completely off, and then it won't work at all.

In general, it's very buggy and unreliable.

I have turned the HVAC off

I have turned the HVAC off completely on my 2013 SL and the remote AC ON works just fine.
