Android ovms app, no SOC on Nissan Leaf 2012 SV

Nissan Leaf 2012 SV.  The OVMS is fully installed.  Wifi works, gps and cellular work, MQTT works, and the android app seems to be working.  I can see it connected to the server because some data is updated like TPMS, Cabin and ambient temperatures, location, energy tab is fully populated, etc...

However the SOC which I know is 80.3% is being reported by the app as zero, the battery icon at the top left shows 0% 0mi.

I am not sure if this is related:

1. In mqtt I have noticed that v.b.soc is also always 0%... however the xnl.v.b.soc.nominal metric always shows the actual SOC %.
2. When I press the charging button in the app, I get a pop up message:  "OVMS 203 Unsupported operation"

Does anyone know why this is happening or what can be done to fix it?
